Description

Two semi-detached villas, numbers 27 and 29, were built around 1820 to 1840. They are constructed of stucco over brick, with concealed roof and a brick party-wall stack. The villas have an attached iron balcony and railings.

The architectural style is two storeys over a basement, with three first-floor windows to each house. The stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to the ground floor, with voussoirs over the openings. A band runs across the first floor, surmounted by end Doric pilasters and detailing between the windows. A frieze and dentil cornice is topped by a blocking course. The windows are mostly 6/6 and 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes in plain reveals, with sills. The basement windows are 3/3 sashes. Roll-edged steps lead to recessed four-panel doors, some with glazing and sidelights, and overlights.

The interior retains original joinery, including panelled shutters to the windows. The attached railings have enriched rods to the sides of the steps. The continuous ground-floor balcony has a Carron Company double-heart-and-anthemion motif balustrade. The design is similar to that of numbers 19 and 21, and 23 and 25, on London Road.
