Description

A pair of semi-detached villas and attached railings, dating from approximately 1820 to 1850. The villas are constructed of stucco over brick, with concealed roof and brick part-wall stacks. They feature iron balconies and railings.

The villas are two storeys high, with basements, and have three windows on the first floor. The stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication and voussoirs over the ground-floor openings. A first-floor band is surmounted by Doric pilasters at the ends and between windows, along with an architrave, frieze, and cornice, topped by a blocking course. The windows are predominantly 2/2 sashes, with some 6/6 sashes and 1/1 horned sashes, all in plain reveals with sills. Basement windows are 3/3 sashes. Recessed entrances are located on the left and right sides, leading to flights of roll-edged steps and 4-panel doors, which are partly glazed, with side-lights and overlights.

The interior retains original joinery, including panelled shutters to some windows, though has not been fully inspected. The subsidiary railings to the sides of the steps are composed of rods with enrichments. Continuous ground-floor balconies have the Carron Company's double-heart-and-anthemion motif on plinths. The design is similar to numbers 23 and 25, and 27 and 29, on London Road.
