Description

A pair of semi-detached houses, numbers 7 and 9, were built around 1820 to 1850. They are constructed with stucco over brick, and have concealed roof, left end, and party-wall stucco stacks. The houses have cast- and wrought-iron railings and window guards. They have a double-depth plan with a full-height range to the rear.

The exterior is three storeys high, with a basement, and seven first-floor windows (arranged 3:1:3), with the outer bays being full-height bows. Stucco detailing includes a first-floor band, frieze, and cornice above the first floor; a crowning frieze, cornice, and blocking course; and pilaster strips between the windows. The windows are 6/6 sashes, with those in the curved bays following the curve of the plan. A pair of central entrances feature 4-panel, part-glazed doors recessed within a pilastered doorcase with a frieze and cornice, and fielded-panel reveals. The rear range also has 6/6 sashes, and to number 7, a tripartite window with a 6/6 sash between two 2/2 sashes.

The interior of number 7 includes an inner entrance with double doors featuring margin-lights and a fanlight with radial glazing bars; egg-and-dart cornices and a ceiling frieze; and a narrow open-well staircase with stick balusters. The doors are 6-fielded-panel. The interior of number 9 was not inspected.

The first-floor window guards have rods finished with half-circles. The railings have urn finials to the stanchions. The design is notable for its semi-detached house form and the robust facade unified by the bowed outer bays.
