Description

A terrace of three houses built around 1820 to 1850. The houses are constructed of ashlar stone over brick, with concealed roofs, brick stacks on the end and party walls, and cast and wrought-iron railings and balconies. They follow a double-depth plan with service rooms at the rear.

The houses are three storeys with an attic and a basement, featuring six windows on the first floor (two to each house). Architectural details include bands across the first and second floors, a frieze and cornice above the second floor, a crowning frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The first and second floors have original 6/6 sash windows, the ones on the first floor being taller. The ground floor features tripartite windows with cambered arches, containing 6/6 sashes between two 2/2 sashes where original. The third floor has 3/3 sashes, and the basement has 8/8 sashes. The rear of the houses retains many 6/6, 3/3, and tripartite 6/6 between 2/2 sashes. The interior has not been inspected.

Roll-edged steps lead to the entrances on the left side, featuring six-fielded-panel doors with fanlights; the fanlight to No.12 has batwing glazing bars. Spearhead railings are located on the sides of the steps. First-floor balconies to No.8 have a stick balustrade, and those to No.12 feature figure-of-eight and anthemion motifs, with similar motifs on the rear balcony. The group value stems from the building’s architectural and historical significance as an example of Cheltenham's 19th-century domestic architecture.
