Description

A pair of semi-detached villas and attached area railings, dating from approximately 1820 to 1832. The villas are constructed of stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof to the left-hand side and mock slates to the right. The property has a party-wall stack.

The overall plan features a main four-window range with a hipped roof, and two-storey entrance bays slightly set back on either side, which now have single windows on the first floor. Stucco detailing includes a plinth, pilasters with sunk panels at the ends and centre of the original main range, interrupting the tooled first-floor band; a frieze; and end pilasters. The windows are 6/6 sash windows throughout, with 6/6 and 8/8 sashes in the basement, all in plain reveals with sills. The entrances have flights of five roll-edged steps leading to six-fielded-panel doors, with the left-hand door being partly glazed and featuring a fanlight with Gothic glazing bars. The central range has wide eaves, while the end bays have low parapets with copings. The interior has not been inspected.

The ground floor has window guards with an embellished lattice motif. The area railings feature a scrolled lozenge motif. Arrowhead railings to the sides of the steps have bars, dogbars, stanchions and urn finials. Park Place was developed by 1832 and these villas abut and form a group with numbers 4 and 6, and 12 and 14.
