Description
Numbers 76, 78, and 80 are a pair of semi-detached houses dating from around 1820 to 1850. They are constructed of stucco over brick, with a slate roof that is hipped over the centre and has party wall and left-end brick stacks. The main range is two storeys high with a basement, and incorporates attics. It has six first-floor windows arranged in a 1:4:1 pattern, with the end bays projecting forward. The exterior features full-height pilasters with sunk panels, an incised first-floor band, a moulded string and frieze with wide eaves, and low parapets and copings. The windows are 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes on the upper floor, and 6/6 sashes on the ground floor and in the basement (where original). The basement windows have 3/6 sashes. The entrances are recessed, with six-fielded-panel doors, sidelights, and overlights featuring decorative glazing, framed by Doric pilasters. Dormers have casement windows. The right return side has a five-window range, with the ground-floor windows featuring tooled architraves, and the rest, 6/6 sashes. The interior retains original joinery, including panelled shutters, though the rest of the interior was not inspected. The area railings to the right of the property have an X-motif. A similar design exists at Number 74 Suffolk Road. The road was originally known as Commercial Street, as shown on a map of 1834.
