Description

Tunstall House is a villa dating to approximately 1830 to 1832. It is constructed of rendered brick with a concealed roof and features tall stucco stacks on the left end and rear. The building has cast and wrought-iron window boxes and railings.

The villa is three storeys high, with a basement, and has one window on the first floor and three on the first floor, including a two-storey entrance bay set back to the left. Stucco detailing includes pilaster strips to the ends and centre of the main range, a continuous cornice over the first floor of the left range, a crowning frieze and cornice. Ground floor windows on the main range have tooled architraves, friezes and cornices. The ground and first floors have 6/6 sashes, while the second floor has 3/6 sashes, all in plain reveals and with sills.

The entrance on the left has a flight of renewed steps leading to a distyle Ionic porch with an entablature and blocking course. It contains a four-panel, part-glazed double door. A return elevation on the left has 6/6 and 3/3 sashes. The interior has not been inspected.

Subsidiary features include a scrolled X-motif balustrade to the side of the porch, embellished balusters to the steps, and window boxes on the ground floor incorporating a double scroll motif. The basement has scrolled guards.

Park Place was developed by 1832, and Tunstall House abuts Tunstall Lodge, No. 1 Park Place, and No. 74 Suffolk Road.
