Description
A pair of semi-detached villas, numbered 44 and 46, and their attached railings, dating from approximately 1830 to 1850. The construction is stucco over brick, with a slate roof and brick end stacks.
The exterior presents two storeys over a basement, with four first-floor windows. The outer bays are wider and have gabled projections. Decorative stucco detailing includes quoins to the angles and raised party wall; a ground-floor band; a moulded first-floor band topped by a balustrade with a concentric circle motif. Windows have roll-moulded architraves ending in lower scroll details. The first floor has pairs of single-pane, round-arched sash windows with horns, and similar single windows are positioned between them. The ground floor has similar triple windows. Flights of steps lead to central entrances, featuring three-panel doors and fanlights with tooled arches supported by acanthus corbels and keystones. Low coped walls flank the steps. The basement has three single-pane sashes with chamfered mullions.
The interior of number 46 features a dogleg staircase with a lion’s paw detail on the newel. Original joinery includes four-panel doors and dividing doors. Original plasterwork includes moulded cornices. Number 44 retains similar interior features.
Attached arrowhead railings mark the boundary division.
Number 46 has been known as Benella since its construction. The villas form a pair with numbers 48 and 50, and share a similar design with numbers 7 and 8 Montpellier Grove.
