Description

A pair of terraced houses, numbers 24 and 26, built around 1838 in Cheltenham. The houses are constructed with stucco over brick, concealing a double-pitched roof. Brick and stucco stacks rise at the ends of the building. The rear features verandahs, and there are iron railings to the front and sides. The layout is double depth, with side staircases and service rooms to the rear.

The exterior has two storeys above basements, with six windows on the first floor (a 3:3 arrangement). Stucco detailing includes a first-floor band, a crowning frieze and cornice, a blocking course, and copings. The windows are primarily 6/6 sash windows, with taller windows on the first floor. Basement windows are 3/6 sashes. The central entrances are accessed by flights of roll-edged steps leading to 4-panel, part-glazed doors with overlights featuring margin-lights. The entrances are within shared porches that have pillars and an entablature.

Inside number 26, there is a narrow, open-well staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. Original joinery includes doors with fluted architraves and floral detailing to the angles, and dividing doors between the ground-floor rooms. Simple cornices are present. The interior of number 24 was not inspected.

Subsidiary features include arrowhead railings to the sides of the steps. The railings to the right (number 26) mark the boundary and front forecourt, with bars and dogbars. Area railings have an X-motif. The rear verandahs have concentric circles to the frieze and an oval motif to the balustrade.
