Description
The Royal Scottish Automobile Club, located at 11 Blythswood Square in Glasgow, is a three-storey and basement terrace block originally built around 1823 and remodelled by James Miller between 1923 and 1926 for use as club premises. The building features a low mansard roof at its pavilions and is composed of 22 bays arranged in a pattern of 5-3-3-3-3-5. The end sections are raised and project forward, showcasing original distyle Ionic porticos at the head of the stairs, which now have windows inserted at the basement level.
The central portico is adorned with coupled Ionic columns and a balustraded parapet, also designed by James Miller. The exterior is finished in ashlar stone, with channelled detailing and voussoirs above the openings at the ground floor. There is a basement band course and a cill band at the first floor. All original windows are sash and case with 12-pane glazing, featuring architraves at the first and second floors, and cornices at the first floor with moulded cills and apron panels, consoled at the end sections. The eaves cornice and blocking course add to the architectural detailing, along with axial stacks and corniced and panelled wallhead stacks at the returns. The roof is covered in slate, and there are cast-iron railings surrounding the property.
The return to West Regent Street consists of five bays, with the first bay from the west being blind at the first and second floors. The basement rises in a slope from the west and repeats the main elevation's detailing. The return to West George Street also has five bays, with the first bay from the west being blind at the second floor.
At the rear, the elevation features two storeys facing the termination of West Regent Lane, with two first-floor leaded lights. The interior has been remodelled to include a six-bay hall with coupled Ionic columns and decorative plasterwork. The dining room contains square piers, while the lounge on the first floor features Ionic screens and white marble chimney pieces.
