Description
No. 49 Great Cumberland Place is a terraced town house built around 1790-1800 as part of the Portman Estate development. The building features stock brick with stucco banded rustication on the ground floor and has a concealed slate roof. It stands four storeys tall, including an attic storey, and is built over a basement. The façade is three windows wide, with a semicircular arched doorway on the left. This doorway has a panelled door with sidelights, and the jambs are topped with shallow consoles that support a doorhead decorated with a Greek fret and a patterned fanlight. The upper floors have recessed sash windows under flat gauged arches. A plat band finishes the ground floor stuccowork, while a plain stucco plat band is present on the third floor, which features a stucco modillion cornice and an attic cornice with a blocking course. The first floor has an original cast iron balcony with a geometric pattern, and there are cast iron spearhead railings with urn finials.
