Description

No. 54 and 56 Great Cumberland Place are a pair of terraced houses built around 1800 to 1820 as part of the Portman Estate development. They are constructed of stock brick with channelled stucco ground floors and have concealed slate roofs. The buildings rise four storeys at No. 54 and five storeys at No. 56, both set above basements. Each house has a two-window wide front. The doorways and ground floor windows on the right side are recessed within an arcade. No. 54 features a porch with Tuscan columns and a dentil cornice, along with panelled doors and fanlights. The upper floors have recessed sash windows beneath flat gauged arches. A plat band finishes the ground floor stuccowork, while No. 56 has a stone-coped parapet. No. 54 is adorned with a stucco string course over the third floor, and both houses have original cast iron balconies with geometric patterns on the first floor, as well as cast iron area railings topped with urn finials.
