Description

The New Club, located at No. 4 Montpellier Parade in Cheltenham, is a villa that has been converted into a club. It was built around 1823 and features a stucco exterior over a brick structure with a concealed roof. The building has two storeys and a double depth plan, with a central hallway.

The façade has five first-floor windows arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern, with the central three windows forming a full-height bow. To the left, there is a two-storey, two-window range. On the first floor, the windows are 6/6 sashes, and there is a central 6-pane French window with a divided overlight. The ground floor features outer 2/2 sashes, while the bow has blind openings and a central portico supported by four Doric pilasters, complete with an architrave, frieze, and cornice topped with a blocking course. The entrance consists of central double 4-panel doors with an overlight and side windows. The building has a low parapet and copings. The left range has 2/2 sashes and French windows, along with a first-floor band, crowning cornice, and blocking course. There is a front stack on the left range.

The left return of the building showcases a full-height bow with tripartite windows on each floor, featuring 6/6 sashes between 2/2 sashes, while the rest of the openings are blind, all set in plain reveals with sills.

Inside, the New Club retains many original features, including an inner entrance and an 8-panel door that is curved in plan, with raised and fielded upper panels and a flush lower panel. It has a solid 'fanlight' with a circle and fan motif. The stone staircase leading to the front bow has a moulded soffit and a decorative iron balustrade with lozenge and oval motifs, along with a wreathed handrail and a decorated landing. The floor is diamond flagged, and there are 6-panel doors with reeded doorcases adorned with fleurons. The plasterwork includes moulded cornices and ceiling friezes. The New Club is part of a notable group of 1820s villas in Montpellier Parade.
