Description

These are five drive piers dating back to around 1823, with alterations made in the 19th century and restorations in the late 20th century. They originally served a carriage sweep along the Bath Road. The northern piers and the northern of the central piers are cylindrical and constructed of fluted ashlar, featuring moulded tops and carved rams' heads above. Three of these piers are topped with iron tripods, each supporting a tapering, fluted gasolier. A single pier at the south end is also fluted and features swagged masks in its frieze, with a carved capping. The northern piers show more signs of weathering. The original lamps were fitted for oil. These piers are a significant feature of the streetscape and contribute to the setting of numbers 114 to 136 on the Bath Road.
