Description

This is a house built around 1840 to 1860. It is located on the southeast side of Bath Road, in Cheltenham. The house is constructed of stucco over brick, with a slate roof and brick end stacks. The basement has iron railings.

The house is three storeys high with a basement and four windows on the first floor. It is designed in an Italianate style. The exterior features stucco detailing which includes quoins at the corners, horizontal rustication to the ground floor that forms voussoirs above the windows, a moulded band, a first-floor sill band, and a second-floor moulded sill band. The first-floor windows have moulded architraves on feet and ‘Gothic’ pilasters with decorative arcades, a frieze, and a cornice. The first and second floors have windows with single glazed sashes, the first-floor windows being round-arched. The ground floor has windows with two over two sashes. An off-centre entrance leads to a six-panel door with an overlight, approached by steps. The eaves are wide and supported by brackets.

The interior of the house has not been inspected.

The attached area railings are made of bars and decorative panels with a cross-and-circle motif. It was once noted that the railings contained web panels from the Carron Company, catalogue 1823/4, but these are no longer present. The building is an unusual design inspired by a Venetian palazzo.
