Description

A row of fourteen houses, built in the early to mid-19th century, now largely used as commercial premises. The houses are constructed of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco dressings, and have a parapeted roof. The houses are three stories high, with a basement level, and each has two windows. The elevations are uniform. All the window openings are flat-arched. The ground floors feature shop fronts, mostly complete, with a fascia entablature and ornamented bracket stops supported on channelled pilasters placed on each party wall. Late 19th-century shop glazing and doors survive on numbers 231, 233, 247, and 249. The first-floor windows extend to the floor and have original 6x6 sash windows in numbers 229-233, 245-249, one window on number 251, and 253. The second-floor windows also have original sashes; 6x6 in numbers 229, 233, 235, 249, and 253, and 3x3 in numbers 245 and 247. Each unit has a pair of cast-iron balconettes that project from the first-floor windows; a single balcony is at number 227, heart and anthemion railings at numbers 233, 237, and 249-253, a fretted anthemion pattern at number 241, and Gothic Revival balconettes at number 229. Projecting sills are present on the second-floor windows. All window lintels are of gauged brick. The houses share continuous joins and a continuous entablature to the parapet of stucco. The interior was not inspected.
