Description

Hope House is a house dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed from squared, coursed carstone ashlar blocks with brick dressings and features a black pantiled roof with some red pantile insertions. The building has a two-storey, five-bay facade facing east and a three-bay facade to the south.

The east front, which faces the Market Place along Lynn Road, has a regular symmetrical classical design. It includes five ground floor sash windows with glazing bars, each two panes high, and five smaller first floor sash windows with single-pane height glazing bars. Each window has rubbed brick flat arched heads and white painted stone sills, with end pilasters at either side. The central ground floor window is enhanced by a semi-circular rubbed brick relieving arch. The roof features one ridge stack and one party wall stack.

The west facade, which has evidence of earlier 17th century work and a built-up gable to the east, includes one flush ground floor sash window with glazing bars, a three-sided brick bay window addition, and three additional sashes with glazing bars. There is a central porch with wooden columns and a flat roof, a six-panel raised and fielded door, an arched fanlight, and a brick architrave. The first floor has three sash windows with glazing bars, and the window openings have brick dressings and brick quoins. The roof is hipped at the east and gabled with a stack at the east.
