Description

The Hollies is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with later alterations. It is a double-pile building, meaning it has two rows of rooms, and is set on a north-south axis. The front facade is brick, with carstone returns, and a pantiled roof. The front pile has renewed gable datestones reading "NS 1757", relating to Nicholas Styleman of Snettisham Hall, although the facade itself is from the late 18th century. The brickwork is of a fine Flemish bond. The front presents five bays, with four sash windows on the ground floor, set under flat, rubbed brick arches (now rendered over). A plat band runs across the first floor, above which are five sash windows with glazing bars, also set under flat, rubbed brick arches. A central six-panel door is flanked by a simple fanlight; evidence suggests a porch has been removed. The roof is steeply pitched and swept at the eaves, with a stack located at the west end. The rear pile projects east and west beyond the front pile. To the east, a blocked floor is evident, along with a first-floor sash window with glazing bars under a flat, rubbed brick arch; it has parapet eaves and an eastern stack. To the west, the ground floor contains glazed French doors with upper panels featuring glazing bars and margin lights, while a sash window with glazing bars is located on the first floor, also with parapet eaves and a western stack. The rear facade, facing south, is brick and five bays wide. A two-storey cottage wing, built of carstone with a red pantiled roof, is attached to the south-east, on School Road.
