Description

The Statue of Venus and Adonis is located at The Bury on the east side of the formal garden. This statue dates from the 18th century and was brought to its current location in 1964. It was created by the sculptor Scheemakers, whose signature can be found on the base. The statue features lifesize white marble figures set on a panelled plinth, which is raised on a low limestone step. The figures depict Adonis seated on a tree stump, gazing up at Venus, who is leaning over to examine his face. To Adonis's right, there is a hound and a cupid. The rectangular plinth has fielded panels on each side, along with a moulded base and cornice.
