Description
The Organ House is a garden building located at the northeast corner of the garden at The Bury, dating from the early 18th century. The year '1735' is carved in brick at the rear, indicating it was built for Mary Gilbert. It is constructed of sandy red brick in Flemish bond, with darker red dressings and quoins, and features a Portland stone band along with moulded stone steps and landings on three sides. The building has a pyramidal scalloped slate roof topped with a restored pineapple finial.
This octagonal structure has a blind recess on the north side and glazed doors on the south, east, and west sides. The corners are reserved, with moulded brick round arches leading to round-headed windows that contain small-pane sashes with radial bars in the heads. The door openings are similar, with the door aligned with the lower sash. The building has a moulded brick offset to a low plinth, a plain stone band at sill level, and a moulded stone impost band. The eaves cornice is wooden and modillioned. Inside, there is a simple plaster dome with a cornice at the impost level, a moulded dado and skirting, and a blind recess on the north side. This building serves as an important axial feature in the garden, situated at the junction of two alleys.
