Description

There are eight carved stone pedestals around the open-air theatre in the gardens at The Bury, dating from the 18th century. These pedestals are made of carved limestone and are all similar in design. Each pedestal stands about 1.5 meters tall and has a rectangular base with chamfered angles. The base leads to a swelling body that remains rectangular in shape, featuring carved foliage along the chamfered shoulder, which transitions into volutes at the front. This design is flanked by a central carved Rococo asymmetrical spray. The neck of each pedestal narrows before widening to a moulded top slab, which is intended to support a lamp. The back of each pedestal is plain with a sinking.
