Tirsi'S Urn In West Part Of Gardens At The Bury At Grid Reference Tl 1874 2193

Tirsi's Urn is a memorial urn located in the west part of the gardens at The Bury, commemorating a pet dog named Tirsi who died in 1768. This large Neo-Classical urn, approximately 1.5 meters tall, is set on a pedestal of equal height and about 1 meter square, surrounded by a circle of Yew trees. The urn features a carved wave-pattern around its base, a moulded stem leading to an ovoid-shaped body with a key-pattern band around the shoulder, and an egg-and-dart band with an acanthus knob on the cap. The solid stone plinth has raised and fielded panels on each face, with an inscription cut into the west side. The moulded base and cap are topped with a delicate corona. The inscription reads: "Within these Shades in peaceful Ashes lies/The most endearing of his Species:/TIRSI loveliest of the faithful kind/In manners meek, and of a gentle Mind./TIRSI/too early lost! the Zephirs sigh,/His Mem'ry dear, his Mistress ever retains,/ And fair unspotted fame attend his Manes/Ob,:7 Sep tr 1768/Aetat 4."
