Description

Wyatt Temple is a garden temple built in 1775 by James Wyatt for John Conyers. Originally located at Copped Hall in Essex, it was moved to its current site at The Bury around 1950. The temple features a moulded stone plinth and steps, a wooden order, and a stuccoed brick rear section. Inside, there is a domed moulded plaster ceiling topped with a lead ribbed dome and finial. The structure is designed in the Ionic style, with a circular interior that has a seat facing east and is accessed by three steps. The rear section includes a hemicycle recess made of solid stucco. The semi-circular front showcases fluted timber columns with enriched base mouldings, angular volutes, and an entablature that has a dentilled cornice and a swelled frieze that extends outward over the columns. The plaster dome features radial moulded ribs, scallops in a wavy outer band, and an elaborate acanthus roundel with a central pendant. The floor has a radial paving pattern made of black and white stone, with a large St. John's cross at the center.
