Description

The statue of Hercules and Antaesis is located on the west side of the north lawn at The Bury, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is an English work attributed to John Nost, who died in 1729, and is based on an original by Giambologna, who lived from 1529 to 1608. The statue is made of limestone and stands on a plinth of Totternhoe stone. It depicts two life-size wrestling figures standing astride a tree stump. The plinth is square and panelled, approximately 1.5 meters high, featuring a boldly moulded base and a cyma moulding on a single large panel on each face. There is necking below the moulded top cornice. This statue is one of a pair and was part of the original design of the garden layout from the 1720s.
