12/189 Statue of Hercules and Antaesis on West side of North lawn at The Bury at Grid Ref TL,1877 2176 (formerly listed as 27.5.68 The Gardens at St Paul's Walden Bury)

Statue. Late C17 or early C18, an English work attributed to John Nost (d.1729) after original by Giambologna (1529-1608). Limestone on Totternhoe stone plinth. Life size of 2 wrestling figures standing astride a tree-stump. Square stone panelled plinth about 1.5M high with boldly moulded base and cyma mould to single large panel on each face. Necking below moulded top cornice. One of pair of statues, part of original conception of the garden layout of 1720s.
