Description

The Statue of Charity is an 18th-century monument located at the Bury, at the head of East Drive. It was erected around 1778 in memory of Mary Bowes and is attributed to the sculptor John Cheere. The statue features lead figures on a limestone pedestal, which is elevated on stone steps. The lifesize statue depicts a standing robed female figure facing north, holding a small child in the crook of her right arm, with a standing child to her left and a seated child looking up at her. The pedestal consists of a tall square plinth with recessed angles, a moulded base, necking, and cornice, along with ovolo moulded fielded panels on each face. This is all raised on a circular base with two moulded stone steps.
