Description
The statue of Samson with two Philistines is located on the east side of the north lawn at The Bury, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. This English group is attributed to John Nost, who died in 1729, and is based on an original design by Michelangelo from around 1530. The statue is made of limestone and stands on a Totternhoe stone plinth. It features life-size figures, with Samson depicted standing and raising a club. The plinth is square, with a panelled design, a moulded base, and an eroded top. This statue is one of a pair and was part of the original garden layout conceived in the 1720s.
