Description
The statue and pedestal on the west side of the canal at the south end of Studley Park, known as the statue of Hercules wrestling Anteus, was created around 1730 for John Aislabie. This limestone statue is set on an ashlar pedestal, with an overall height of approximately 3 metres. The pedestal features a moulded plinth and cornice. The statue depicts Hercules, who is supported by a tree trunk, lifting Anteus high into the air. It is positioned at the focus of a small semicircular terraced open-air theatre, near the Rustic Bridge and the original southern limit of the gardens.
