Description

The grotto on the north side of the reservoir is a structure dating from around 1730, likely designed by Robert Doe for John Aislabie. It is constructed from tufa and limestone rubble, with some parts being rock-cut. The grotto is an artificial cave that measures approximately 3 metres wide, 2 metres long, and 2 metres high at its center. It features a narrow entrance with a segmental arch made of large tufa blocks and has a barrel-vaulted roof. The design is similar to that of the Octagon Tower tunnel and the Rustic Bridge.
