Description
The statue on the west side of the north Crescent Pond in Studley Park is a Grade II listed structure dating from around 1730, commissioned by John Aislabie and restored around 1970. It features a lead figure of Euricles with a tortoise, set on an ashlar pedestal that stands approximately 3 metres tall. The figure is depicted with one foot on a rock, which the tortoise is attempting to climb. The pedestal has a moulded base and cornice. This statue is part of the original garden furnishings, which also included thermes and tubs for orange and lemon trees. A drawing by W T C Walker from around 1750 provides further historical context.
