Description

The Canal Gates and flanking walls on the west side of The Lake were built around 1730 for John Aislabie. They were restored in 1967 and 1985. The structure includes gates, an overthrow, gate piers, flanking walls, railings, and a lodge house. The gates consist of two leaves with bars and dogbars featuring scrolled decoration, while the overthrow is adorned with scrolls, foliage, and a shield. The flanking piers are approximately 4 metres high, each with a moulded base and cornice topped by a tall urn decorated with garlands and masks. The flanking walls have round-arched pedestrian gateways with plain gates and pilaster buttresses that are surmounted by ball finials. On the left, the wall ramps down and supports a railing with trefoil finials. A gateway provides access to the stewards house, which is now a restaurant. The wall continues and connects with the walling of the cascade in front of the restaurant. On the right side, there is a small lodge house known as the 'lemonade house', built against the wall and undergoing complete rebuilding at the time of the survey. A lodge similar in design to the Fishing Tabernacles on the Cascade used to stand behind the wall on the left but was demolished around 1860 when the restaurant was constructed.
