Description

Stewards House, now a National Trust restaurant and shop, was built around 1860, likely for the estate steward of the 1st Marquis of Ripon, Viscount Goderick, and Earl de Grey. The building has been altered around 1960. It is constructed of rendered brick and features a Westmorland slate roof. The house is two storeys high with three bays, and the narrow central gabled bay projects slightly. The central entrance consists of a glazed double door with an overlight, flanked by iron-framed bay windows. On the first floor, there are three narrow windows with iron frames, which were originally four-pane sashes. The eaves cornice is wooden and modillioned, with oversailing eaves and a shallow hipped roof. There are chimney stacks on both the left and right sides behind the ridge. The right side of the building has a shallow projecting bay with a hipped roof. This structure is included for its group value.
