Description
Half Moon Pond is a pond located in the water gardens, completed in 1728 for John Aislabie. It is lined with stone and clay and is situated on a small semicircular turf terrace on the west side of the Canal, at its north end. The pond frames the statue of the Wrestlers. This arrangement of terrace, pond, and statue was originally complemented by a semicircular amphitheatre at the south end of the Canal, where the original statue of Hercules remains. Half Moon Pond is part of a group that includes Moon and Crescent Ponds. The Reservoir at the south end of the gardens is sometimes referred to as Half Moon Pond.
