Description
The statue of Hercules is located at the north end of the central alley that runs north from The Bury in St Paul's Walden. It dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century and is attributed to the English sculptor John Nost, who died in 1729. The statue is made of limestone and stands at one and a half times lifesize, depicting Hercules facing south with a lion's skin draped over his left shoulder. It rests on a rough rectangular base, with a plinth that is one and a half meters high and about one meter square. The plinth is crafted from fine-grained limestone and features a moulded plinth and capping, with ovolo moulding on the panelled sides. The panel has a drafted margin and frosted rustication in the field. This statue is a central feature in the layout of the garden, which was part of the original design from the 1720s.
