Description

The small temple above the theatre in the gardens at The Bury is a garden temple dating from the 18th century. It features columns and a roof that was renewed in the 20th century. The temple has a limestone base and steps, with columns supporting a moulded wooden painted entablature and a ribbed copper dome, which has a plastered dome inside. This circular Tuscan temple is situated on a mound at the northern end of the open-air theatre and is supported by six columns that carry the dome topped with an acorn finial. The limestone base includes paving arranged in a radial pattern radiating from a central roundel, and there are moulded stone steps on the southern half. The inner dome is decorated with mouldings that outline three gored panels, featuring a central pendant.
