Description

The Temple beside the lake at The Bury is a garden temple built in 1773 by Sir William Chambers. Originally located at Danson Park in Kent, it was re-erected at this site in 1961, with an inscription on the skirting inside commemorating the rebuilding. The temple is constructed of brick with a stucco front and red brick sides and rear. It features a timber portico with stone bases for the columns and five moulded stone steps leading down into the lake. The building has a low-pitched roof and is a small rectangular structure that faces west across the lake towards the Wyatt Temple at the opposite end of the garden's first cross-axis.

At the rear, there is a central projection that houses an arched recess inside. The front boasts a tetrastyle Doric portico designed in an unfluted Roman Doric order, complete with a triglyph frieze, mutular cornice, and triangular pediment. A tall capped urn, likely made of Coade stone, sits on the roof ridge. On either side of a wider round-headed doorway, which features a three-quarter glazed door and a lion keystone, are two round-headed sash windows. The portico is enhanced by pilasters and a panelled soffit, with sections of entablature on the north and south sides.
