10/195 Pair of sphinxes to south of temple in theatre in the gardens at The Bury at Grid Ref TL 1887 2205 (formerly listed as 27.5.68 The Gardens at St Paul's Walden Bury)

Pair of statues of sphinxes. C18 probably English after French models of time of Louis XIV. Lead figures on limestone plinths. 2 crouched half-lifesize figures with paws extended facing one another. E figure has tasselled covering extended to form the back of a dress with enlarged shoulders to female torso with hair in a kerchief. Rusticated base to figure. Broad moulded base and cap to stone plinth with bead-moulded sunk panel in each face. W figure similar but dress has bows to shoulders and she wears a choker and her hair in a bun. The figures are probably not representations of particular persons.
