Description
The easternmost of a pair of Sphinxes located to the west of Combe Bank is a garden ornament made of 18th century Portland stone. This Sphinx is inspired by classical antique Egyptian models and is positioned on either side of a mid-19th century flight of steps. The Sphinx measures about 5 feet long and is depicted in a crouching position, resting on a rectangular moulded stone base. It has likely been in this location since the rose garden was established.
