Description
The westernmost of a pair of sphinxes is located to the west of Combe Bank. This garden statue is one of a pair of probable 18th century Portland stone sphinxes inspired by classical antique Egyptian models. The sphinx is approximately 5 feet long and is depicted in a recumbent position on a rectangular stone base. It has likely remained in this position since the rose garden was established in the 19th century, and it is situated on either side of a flight of mid-19th century steps.
