Description

The statue of a lion located to the west of Combe Bank is a garden statue made of 18th century Portland stone. It is a copy of a pair of lions that were originally erected at the end of the exedra of Chiswick House between 1738 and 1739. The recumbent lion is set on an oval plinth and has weathered significantly over time.

Historical records indicate that this statue appears in a lithograph from the 1830s or 1840s, depicted on a terrace wall to the north of Combe Bank. It was likely relocated in the 1930s when Combe Bank transitioned into a school and a classroom block was constructed to the north of the house.
