Description
The churchyard cross at the Church of All Saints was built in 1908 and is believed to be the last work designed by G.F. Bodley, who passed away in 1907. It was created as a memorial to Rev H.T. Valentine’s daughter, Clair, who was vicar from 1889 to 1906. The cross is made of sandy limestone, featuring weathered bedding planes, with marble inscribed panels set into the base. It resembles a wayside preaching cross and stands on a tall octagonal plinth that has three moulded steps. The inscription on the riser of the top step reads: "O SAVIOUR OF THE/WORLD WHO BY/THY CROSS AND/PRECIOUS BLOOD HAS/REDEEMED US. SAVE/US AND HELP US WE/HUMBLY BESEECH/THEE O LORD." The plinth is approximately 1.5 meters high and has an octagonal base block with hollow diagonal faces and a plain triangular feature. There is moulding around the bottom and flowers on the chamfered top edge. Each cardinal face of the base has an inscribed marble panel. The tapered octagonal fluted shaft features the monogram IHS on the east face within a shield. It is topped with an octagonal moulded cap and a crocketed ogee aedicule, which displays a crucifixion scene on the east side and Christ in Majesty on the west.
