Description

The statue of Cain and Abel is located at The Bury, at the west end of an alley running west and north. It dates from the 18th century and is believed to be the work of English sculptor John Nost, who died in 1729, inspired by a group created around 1560 by Giambologna, which is now housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The statue features lead figures set on a stone base with a limestone plinth. It depicts a lifesize figure standing over a crouched figure, grasping him by the hair with his left hand while raising his right hand. The tall stone plinth has a moulded base, ovolo moulded fielded panels on each face, necking, and an overhanging moulded cornice. This statue is an original feature of the garden layout from the 1720s.
