Description
No. 6 West Street is a house from the early 19th century, though it has earlier origins. It is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a gabled roof made of concrete interlocking pantiles. The building has two storeys, attics, and cellars, featuring two hipped dormers, each with a double-hung sash window that has a central vertical glazing bar and a moulded surround. The front of the house displays a painted timber cornice with modillions and a three-window range of flush double-hung sashes, again with central vertical glazing bars and moulded surrounds. On the ground floor, there are two similar windows flanking a central doorcase, which has an open pediment supported by consoles and a semicircular fanlight with radial glazing bars. The door itself has six raised-and-fielded panels and is accessed by one stone step. At the rear, there are two large rendered stacks on the wall, along with a extensively renovated white weatherboarded lean-to.
Inside, the layout features a central entrance corridor with simple contemporary panelling below the dado and doors with architraves. There is a Chinese Chippendale staircase that is doglegged but splits into two separate flights leading to the attics. At the base of the stairs, there is a painted timber ogee arch, and the roof is constructed with fully-framed joggled purlins.
