Description
No. 8 Market Hill is a house dating from the early 19th century. It is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a hipped concrete plain tile roof. The building has two storeys and features a three-window range, with single-storey extensions on each side.
The front elevation includes three asymmetrical 12-pane sash windows with moulded surrounds on the first floor. The ground floor has a central doorcase with a flat hood supported by consoles, and the door features a moulded architrave with two moulded panels over two flush panels. There are three steps leading up to the door, flanked by wrought-iron handrails with ball knobs. On either side of the door are 16-pane sash windows.
The south-east lean-to has a four-light horizontal window above a door and an area of brickwork, with a slate roof. The front part of the north-west flank extension has a forward-sloping lean-to roof and a 19th-century shop front with four lights, a fascia, thin side pilasters, and a door with a rectangular fanlight. The rear part is a lean-to against the main flank, which is clad in black weatherboarding.
At the rear, there is a single-storey catslide-roofed wing and an extension that is partly two storeys high, featuring two large stacks and one 16-pane sash window on the first floor. The ground floor includes one 12-pane sash window, one 16-pane sash window, and a 20th-century small-paned rear door.
Inside, the house has a late softwood timber frame with main members that have beaded corners. There is a central hall with a tight winder stair off one side.
