Description
No. 12 Westgate Street is a house that dates from the late 17th century, with an 18th-century front. It is constructed from timber framing and rendered, topped with a plain tiled roof. The building has two storeys, attics, and cellars. The main front features three windows: six-pane windows on the first storey and 16-pane windows on the ground storey, all set in flush cased frames. There is a narrow sash window on the far left of each storey. The roof includes three gabled dormers, each with 4-pane, 2-light casement windows, adorned with pierced ornamental ridge tiles, fluted bargeboards, and hanging finials. The entrance features a six-panel door set in deep panelled reveals with a moulded architrave. A tall red brick chimney stack on the east side has three attached hexagonal shafts and rebuilt corbelled caps, with its rectangular base mostly hidden by the ridge of the roof. There are lean-to extensions and a wing at the rear.
Inside, there is a large cellar with brick walls, some flint, and reused stone blocks. The main beams are boxed in, and the fireplaces have been replaced, suggesting the building may have originally had a jettied design. The windows have panelled internal shutters. The entrance hall features a dado of Jacobean panelling that was uncovered during restoration in the 1970s. An early 19th-century staircase with stick balusters and a ramped handrail leads to the upper levels. The front range of the roof displays clasped purlins.
