Description
The Greene King Maltings, located on the south-east corner of College Street in Bury St Edmunds, is a maltings building dated 1880, as indicated by a keystone above the entry featuring the initials EG & S, which stand for Edward Greene and Son. The structure is built of red brick with white brick details and has a hipped slate roof, situated on a corner site.
The exterior consists of three storeys. The Westgate Street front is divided into seven bays by plain brick pilasters. On the top storey, there are eight windows, all but one of which are blocked, featuring plain reveals and shallow segmental arches. The first storey has seven windows, one of which is blocked, while the others are simulated sashes with vertical glazing bars. The ground storey includes four similar windows: three longer 12-pane sashes and a 20th-century plate-glass shop window to the left of the entrance arch.
At the center of the roof, there is a large dormer resembling a lucam, which features mock-timbering with herringbone brick infill, pierced and fluted bargeboards, an ornate spike finial, and a two-light four-paned casement window. The College Street side has a seven-window range on the first and second storeys, styled similarly to the Westgate Street front, with three blocked windows on each storey and two 12-pane sashes on the ground storey.
The College Street frontage is also divided into seven bays by plain pilasters and relates to a rear range that runs parallel to the Westgate front, gabled to College Street. The ground storey of this section has been altered; it was formerly a wide entry but is now infilled with three windows. The second storey of the gable is blank, and the roof features pierced and fluted bargeboards. The interior has not been inspected.
