Description

Number 42 St Enodoc is a house that has been divided into two properties. It features an early 19th-century front and a partly 16th-century interior. The building is timber-framed, rendered, and lined to simulate stone blocks, with 20th-century plain tiles on the roof.

The exterior is two storeys high and has three windows. The upper storey has small-paned, two-light casement windows in flush frames, while the ground storey features two 16-pane sash windows in cased frames with moulded architraves. There are two doors, each with four sunk panels, and an internal chimney with a plain red brick shaft.

Inside, the ground-storey front room of No.42 has a main beam, possibly inserted, that features double ogee-moulding and widely spaced studding. On the upper storey, there are remains of an open truss that once had long arched braces, with later studding added. Peg-holes on the tie-beam suggest there may have been a former queen-post roof, but the roof was raised when the house was refronted around 1800. During restoration, a low square-headed door was uncovered in the dividing wall between Nos 42 and 43, featuring a roll-moulded surround and two sections of square Jacobean panelling. Access to No.43 is not possible.
