Description
Angel Cottage and Davors Cottage are a pair of houses that were originally part of a row of four cottages, dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century. They were extensively restored in 1964. The buildings are timber-framed, with the timber exposed on the upper storey at both the front and rear, while the ground storey is rendered. They feature a plaintiled roof and have two internal chimney stacks.
The exterior consists of two storeys with a six-window range, all featuring 20th-century two-light casements. The ground storey has random 20th-century fenestration and three plain boarded doors.
Inside, both halves of the building are divided into three bays, with the main beams exposed on the upper storey, which includes housings for long braces. In Davors Cottage (No.18), the trimmers have scroll stops, and two internal cross-beams are set on edge, possibly indicating a former smoke-bay. In Angel Cottage (No.20), a large ornate early 18th-century fireplace surround with cast-iron panels, depicting a man and a woman within an arbour-like decoration, was added during the 1964 restoration and is said to have come from Cavenham Hall. The roofs were not seen.
