Description
7A and 8 College Road is a house that now includes a separate flat on the second and part of the first storey. It has a core dating back to the 16th century, with alterations made in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed and roughcast-rendered, with white brick at the ground storey on the west end and slate roofs.
The exterior features three storeys, with a short cross-wing at the west end topped by a gabled roof. The main range has four windows on the first storey: one sash window with a single vertical glazing bar and three narrow paired sashes without glazing bars. There are two 16-pane sashes on both the top and ground storeys, all set in flush cased frames. The entrance door to No. 8 is recessed and has six panels, with four sunk upper panels featuring moulded surrounds and two flush lower panels. It is framed by a heavy wood doorcase with a flat cornice hood. No. 7A has a later half-glazed door. The cross-wing includes a wide tripartite sash window without glazing bars on the ground storey and a two-light Edwardian casement window on the first storey with small panes in the top lights. The west side features similar windows on the first storey, along with a projecting rectangular bay that has heavy Edwardian Jacobean mullion-and-transom windows on the ground storey.
Inside, a timber frame runs throughout the building but is largely covered by Edwardian work. Most interior features, including the staircase and a heavy three-light 'Gothic' window on the half-landing, date from the late 19th or early 20th century. The west end wing displays good exposed studding on the first storey. A heavily weathered post in the west wall has a mortice for a window sill, marking the line of the original rear wall, which was removed when a small rear extension and chimney stack were added. The top storey is also an addition.
