Description
The Limes is a house dating from the late 18th century. It is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a half-hipped gambrel roof covered in plain tiles. The building has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar, featuring a three-window range and a two-storey rear wing.
The front façade includes a plain parapet and a tripartite sash window with a central vertical glazing bar, flanked by a single similar sash window on the first floor. The ground floor features a central doorcase with a pediment, a pulvinated frieze, a shouldered architrave, and a door with four recessed panels above two reeded panels. There is a flight of three stone steps with an iron boot scraper, and on either side, there are canted bay windows with slate hipped roofs and sash windows that have single vertical glazing bars.
On the northern side, there is a square sash window in the attic with margin glazing bars, and on the ground floor, a 12-pane flush sash window. The two-storey rear extension is constructed of rendered timber-framing and has a stripped gabled roof. The back wall of the main block features two tall brick stacks and a gabled dormer with a two-light casement, along with a rear entrance door and one window opening.
Inside, the house showcases high-quality timber framing from the period, with minimal reused timber. The central entrance hall has a dogleg staircase with column-on-vase balusters and moulded strings. The rear entrance includes a significant amount of reused timber from the 16th century. The cellar contains a curious oval-shaped brick basin of uncertain purpose.
