Description

No. 53 High Street is a late 19th-century shop located in Maldon. It is built of red English-bond brick with ashlar dressings and features a machine-made plain tile roof adorned with decorative ridge tiles. The building stands three storeys tall with a symmetrical front that has a wide central bay flanked by narrow side bays. At the top, there is a plain parapet with ashlar coping and a moulded band beneath it.

The first and second floors are framed by four ashlar half-octagonal shafts with bell capitals at each storey, which continue as a coved band above the second floor. The central bay on the second floor features two linked semicircular-headed plain sash windows with moulded brick jambs and an ashlar keystone. The first floor showcases a canted ashlar bay window with plain sash windows that have curved corners and a painted timber cornice. Each of the flanking bays has a semicircular-headed plain sash window with a moulded brick surround and an apron panel below on the second floor, while the first floor has tall two-light casement windows with elliptical arches.

On the ground floor, there is a 19th-century shop front with an ashlar surround, a projecting ashlar cornice with a coffered soffit supported by brackets and end consoles. The shop opening is flanked by three coupled Gothic shafts, with the central shaft rising to the flank consoles, all featuring moulded capitals and bases. Above the modern metal shop front, there is a wide elliptical stone arch with a keystone and panelled spandrels. The interior has not been inspected.
